Losing the keyboard on Win7

For some reason, I keep losing my APL keyboard from time to time. I have to restart the APL interpreter to get it back again. Maybe I am accidentally hitting some keystroke that seems to make the keyboard change, or some other event is causing it. When it happens, my CTL-R which would show ⍴ shows a character that has a top and bottom arrowhead. My CTL-W which would give me ⍵ is giving me a vertical bar with a short horizontal bar in the middle to the left of the vertical bar. And CTL-S gives me double exclamation points as a single character.

Any ideas what might be happening or how I can restore the keyboard without having to save my current work and restart a new APL session?

Hi Jay

I think that your problem is that holding Ctrl-Shift down causes Windows to swap keyboards around; to get back to the APL characters, you should just need to hold Ctrl-Shift down for a brief moment and it'll flip back to APL.

Alternatively, you might like to alter the keystroke for keyboard swapping .. details of how to do this can be found in the FAQ section at

Ah - yes, with the shift and control key next to each other, I often must hit both by mistake when entering one of the APL control keys. Thank you for pointing out how to change back to the APL keyboard.
